Vesicovaginal Fistula Repair Case Study #3
Patient Flies from Trinidad Following Failed 1x Abdominal/Vaginal Fistula Repair
Fistula Symptoms: Persistent urinary leakage through vagina
Initial Cause of Fistula: Surgery for Uterine Fibroids
Failed Attempt to Repair Fistula: 1x abdominal/vaginal repair by Urologist in Trinidad
Patient presented from Trinidad, W. Indies with VVF. She had hysterectomy a year prior for uterine fibroids and suffered a VVF following the surgery. She underwent an attempted abdominal/vaginal repair in Trinidad by Urologist. This was not successful and she had persistent leakage of urine constantly from her vagina. She was told that she needed another abdominal repair at home in Trinidad through a large abdominal incision and would need to be in the hospital for a week and out of work for 6-8 weeks. She was interested in a Laparoscopic approach, however was told it was not possible and could not be done. She researched this on her own and made the decision to fly to Atlanta to see Dr. Moore and Miklos at their Laparoscopic Urogynecology Center. She found that they were one of the busiest centers in the world treating fistula’s laparoscopically. She flew to Atlanta with her sister and had successful Laparoscopic Repair of her VVF with Dr. Moore and Miklos. She stayed overnight in the hospital one night and returned home the following week. She has continued to do well with a successful repair.
